Deck Chairs Overboard
Deck Chairs Overboard is a playful and imaginative exploration of life at sea, where boats, buildings and curious characters seem to float together in a world with its own set of rules.
The painting is dominated by brilliant blue water, filled with an extraordinary collection of vessels and colourful forms. Tall striped sails rise above tiny boats, while unusual structures balance precariously across the water. Some appear to be boats, others houses, and some seem to exist somewhere wonderfully in between.
Above the horizon, rolling green hills, oversized clouds and whimsical shapes create an almost dreamlike landscape. Beneath them, the ocean becomes increasingly busy and abstract, with boats, crosses, buildings and unexpected objects scattered throughout the scene as though an entire seaside village has somehow drifted out to sea.
Look closer and the personality of the painting begins to reveal itself. Faces appear within unexpected places, tiny boats hide amongst larger forms and hand-drawn lines give each character and structure its own individuality. There is a sense of organised chaos throughout the work, with something new to discover each time you look.
To me, Deck Chairs Overboard captures the unpredictability and humour of life. Sometimes everything feels slightly off balance, plans change and the familiar becomes unfamiliar, but somehow we continue to navigate our way through it. It is a celebration of imagination, movement and finding joy amongst the chaos.
