Black Cockatoo
Black Cockatoo is a celebration of the Australian landscape, where nature, wildlife and the traces of human life come together in one richly layered world.
At the heart of the painting is the striking black cockatoo, bold and unmistakable amongst an abundance of native-inspired foliage, flowers and organic forms. Deep greens, earthy reds and burnt oranges are contrasted with vibrant turquoise, creating a landscape that feels both familiar and wonderfully imagined.
Around the cockatoo, the painting unfolds into a collection of smaller stories. Buildings emerge between the trees, branches twist through the landscape and tiny creatures and unexpected details appear amongst the leaves. There is a beautiful tension between the natural and built environments, with each seeming to grow into and around the other.
The layers of colour, texture and pattern encourage you to keep exploring. What first appears to be a single scene gradually reveals hidden faces, animals, structures and playful details, giving the artwork a sense of discovery each time you return to it.
To me, Black Cockatoo is about the wild beauty and character of the Australian landscape. It captures that feeling of being surrounded by nature, where birds call overhead, trees take on lives of their own and there is always something unexpected waiting to be noticed.
